CHATEAU L'EVANGILE
This Pomerol producer is one of the appellation's oldest, stretching back as far as 1741. It sits on a long strip of gravel on the south-eastern part of the Pomerol plateau that is unique to only three properties. It is bordered to the north by Château Pétrus, and to the south it is separated only by a road from Cheval Blanc. A rarefied hood, indeed.
Domaines Barons de Rothschild acquired the estate in 1990 and wasted no time in stamping their mark on it, instigating a more rigorous selection process for the grand vin, introducing a second wine, replanting vineyards and renovating the vat room and cellars.
All this activity has paid dividends, with Château l’Evangile lately producing a sustained stretch of very good vintages, elegant, powerful, long-lived wines that will age well.
